Twin PCS TMA halves tower TMA count
An important addition to Radio Frequency Systems’ wideband tower-mount amplifier (TMA) series—the new twin 1900-MHz ‘personal communications services’ (PCS) TMA—promises to halve the TMA count for most PCS applications. The twin PCS TMA provides the functionality of two TMAs in one compact and extremely lightweight package, reducing tower loading and dramatically cutting installation time and costs. According to Ganesh Krishnan, RFS Area Product Manager RF Conditioning, where six single TMAs and six associated bias-Ts are typically required for any one tri-sector installation, these can now be replaced by just three equivalent-sized twin TMA units and three bias-Ts. “That’s less wind loading on the tower, half the installation time, and a substantial reduction in tower space lease costs,” Krishnan said.
Providing a unique twin full-duplex amplifier solution for PCS applications, the twin TMA has a nominal gain of 12 dB. Importantly, the twin unit is actually smaller than most competing single-band dual TMAs on the market today and weighs less than nine kilograms. This low weight and compact form factor, coupled with the TMA’s ability to halve the total TMA count per tower, can result in a substantial and ongoing saving in tower-space leasing costs. The twin PCS wideband TMAs are available in two models: a four-port unit for PCS- only applications, and a six-port unit with built-in diplexers and 850-MHz bypass for 1900-MHz PCS/850-MHz ‘cellular’ overlay applications. The twin unit also provides for easy and error-free installation, with either of its two input ports able to accommodate the power input from a single bias-T. The TMA’s unique amplifier design combines sharp filter roll-off (5 dB/MHz) coupled with a better than 15 nanosecond unit-to-unit variation in absolute uplink delay. This ensures the TMAs provide optimal transmit/receive isolation plus premium receive diversity performance.
